Healing Justice: Afro Indigenous Mental Health Diversion

Healing Justice: Afro-Indigenous Mental Health Diversion is a grassroots initiative by the Resettlement Society that directly addresses the unmet mental health needs of Afro-Indigenous individuals involved in the criminal justice system in Ontario. Rooted in the principles of healing, cultural reclamation, and community-led care, this project offers an alternative path away from incarceration — one that centers wellness over punishment.

Why this work Matters

The Resettlement Society is a grassroots organization dedicated to community-led justice transformation, supporting those impacted by incarceration, displacement, and systemic violence. We are committed to building pathways toward freedom, healing, and liberation for Afro-Indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities.

This initiative seeks to interrupt those cycles - by creating a community-based mental health diversion model grounded in:

  • Afro-Indigenous cultural practices

  • Land-based healing

  • Restorative and transformative justice

  • Trauma-informed, anti-colonial mental health support

Our Approach

We work in collaboration with:

  • Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Healers

  • Afro-Indigenous mental health practitioners

  • Legal advocates and diversion specialists

  • Families and impacted communities

Through individualized diversion plans, we help justice-involved Afro-Indigenous people access:

  • Mental health assessments rooted in cultural safety

  • Healing circles and traditional support networks

  • Housing, employment, and educational support

  • Advocacy in court and alternative sentencing options

Vision & Values

We envision a future where Afro-Indigenous people heal in community — not in cages. Our work is guided by the following values:

  • Liberation over punishment

  • Accountability through care

  • Sovereignty and self-determination

  • Healing as a right, not a privilege
